Chapter 6 of 7

Memory outside the window

Everything so far lives in one conversation. When Hollis Hardware writes again next week, the new conversation starts with an empty window.

This chapter: How can the assistant remember something from one conversation in the next?

You will learn

  • Why a new session starts empty
  • Memory notes: files the assistant writes and reads in a later session
  • What the host, not the model, keeps control of
Words you’ll meet (3)
Session
One conversation. Nothing in its window carries over to the next.
Memory tool
Anthropic's memory tool lets Claude create, read, update and delete files under /memories that persist between conversations.
Memory note
A short file the assistant chose to write, read back into the window when a later session starts.

The picture on the left is live. Each step below asks you to do one thing in it; the story continues here as you go.

Step 1 of 4

Hollis Hardware writes: “Hi, this is Dev at Hollis Hardware. We moved to an enterprise contract this month, so please keep that in mind next time we write.” A week later, in a new conversation, they write again. A session is one conversation, and nothing in its window carries over to the next. Run both conversations.
